TRADITIONAL character + modern
raise, build-under + extend

Nundah-Renovation-Front Facade-Brisbane building designer

A graceful revival of a Queensland classic

Tucked into the leafy streets of Nundah, this home had all the makings of a character classic — decorative detailing, a charming gabled roofline, and the quiet dignity of a home that had stood the test of time. But like so many older Queenslanders, its beauty had become buried beneath outdated layouts, enclosed verandahs, and tired finishes that dulled its presence both inside and out.
The vision for this project was simple yet deeply rewarding: to breathe new life into an old home, celebrating its heritage while creating a more open, light-filled, and livable space for modern family life.
With a careful, sensitive design approach, the result is a true transformation — a home that now feels brighter, more functional, and full of heart once again.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Restoring an older home always comes with a unique set of challenges — from navigating past renovations and structural limitations to ensuring any updates respect the home’s original style and comply with heritage overlays. This Nundah renovation was no different.

VERANDAH REVEAL & STREET APPEAL

Over the years, the original front verandahs had been built in and enclosed, masking the façade’s charm and cutting off natural light and ventilation. One of the most impactful changes we made was to remove the enclosures and restore the verandahs to their original open form.
This move did far more than improve aesthetics — it reconnected the home with the street, invited in breezes, and immediately elevated its presence. The reinstated verandahs now provide both visual impact and a usable outdoor space that ties seamlessly into the overall design narrative.

LIGHT, FLOW & FUNCTION

Internally, the home had suffered from a closed-in floorplan, with smaller rooms and poor access to daylight. Our approach was to open up key living areas, introduce better circulation paths, and maximise natural light wherever possible.
Strategic wall removals, larger openings, and a more intuitive layout have completely changed how the home feels. What was once dim and disconnected is now bright, airy, and open — a place where movement feels natural and each space flows effortlessly into the next.

MATERIALITY & PALETTE

One of the keys to tying old and new together was the use of a clean, timeless material palette. We leaned into crisp white walls, warm timber accents, and natural textures to create a space that feels fresh but still connected to the home’s character roots.
Outside, these elements have re-energised the façade without overwhelming its original charm. Inside, they bring warmth and cohesion to the modernised layout — resulting in interiors that feel both refined and lived-in, grounded in history but ready for the future.

DESIGN OUTCOME

What began as a home in need of rescue has been completely reimagined — not with grand gestures, but with thoughtful, character-led design that respects the past while making space for the future.
Today, this Nundah residence feels like it’s been given a second chance. The return of the open verandahs, the infusion of light, and the calming, tactile interiors all speak to a home that’s been lovingly revived — and now ready to create new memories for many years to come.
We’re proud of this transformation and honoured to have played a part in restoring such a special piece of Queensland’s residential fabric.
