At Queensland Designer Homes, we believe that great design is about more than lines on paper – it’s about transforming the way familieslive, day to day. Our project in Newmarket is a perfect example of this philosophy in action. In collaboration with the award-winning team at rRedkem Constructions, we were privileged to design a home that blends Queensland charm with modern practicality, while celebrating the lifestyle our clients envisioned.
Our clients approached us with a much-loved character home in Newmarket that no longer met the needs of their growing family. They loved the location, the traditional street appeal, and the sense of community, but they needed more space and functionality. Their vision was to lift and build under the existing structure, extend to the rear, and create a seamless connection between old and new.

- Preserving the traditional charm of the original Queenslander façade.
- Adding contemporary living spaces that feel bright, open, and inviting.
- Maximising indoor–outdoor connections for year-round enjoyment of Brisbane’s climate.
- Designing practical spaces to grow with the family over the coming years.

The Design Approach
Our approach always begins with listening. During our design workshops, we focused on understanding the family’s lifestyle rhythms – where they gathered, how they entertained, and what “home” meant to them. This informed a design strategy that was both aspirational and grounded in practicality.
The existing home was raised to unlock the potential of the undercroft. This new lower level became the heart of family life, accommodating open-plan living, dining, and kitchen zones with direct access to the backyard and outdoor entertaining areas. Large sliding doors were incorporated to dissolve the barrier between inside and out, allowing breezes to flow through the home and encouraging natural light throughout. The rear extension was designed with generosity in mind. A spacious covered deck now provides the perfect setting for family barbecues and relaxed evenings with friends, while overlooking the garden. Upstairs, the retained original structure was reimagined for private bedrooms, quieter retreats, and spaces that respect the home’s heritage character. |

Partnering with Redkem Constructions ensured that every detail was brought to life with care and craftsmanship. Their award-winning experience in renovations and extensions meant that the build process respected the existing home’s character while embracing the new.

The Result
The completed Newmarket home strikes a balance between traditional charm and modern lifestyle. The character façade continues to contribute to the streetscape, while the interiors now support the family’s day-to-day life with functional, light-filled spaces. The transition from old to new feels effortless, with the extension and build-under providing the space and comfort the owners dreamed of.
Most importantly, the home reflects the family’s unique lifestyle. Whether it’s enjoying quiet mornings on the deck, entertaining guests, or watching the children play in the garden, every corner of the design has been carefully considered to enhance their quality of life.
